Following the structure of a college-level master class, this instructional program was filmed at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Joe Lovano (one of the world`s leading saxophone improvisers) leads viewers through the improvisational process, equipping them with the tools needed to feel comfortable playing their instrument without using written music as a guide. What makes PERSONAL APPROACH unique is that the principles explored here can be applied to any instrument. Through several solo, duo, trio, and quartet performances, Lovano not only puts his theories into practice, but also illustrates how to fully utilize individual practice time, and how to work best with fellow musicians. Rather than advising students to follow any one technique, the lessons here stress that the key to improvisation is in relaxing, absorbing the music, and thinking spontaneously. By encouraging free thought, Lovano hopes to help students find their own voice. Through careful listening, students will learn how to mentally dissect the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic elements of a piece so that they can experiment with these basic components on their own.
