This critical review focuses on the period when T. Rextasy was sweeping the UK, with fans and critics thrilling to the glam-rock attitude the band originated, alongside the marrying of a catchy pop-folk sensibility with distorted guitars. Following a previous incarnation as an art-folk duo of Marc Bolan and percussionist Steve Peregrine Took, Bolan amped up the sound and added new members when Took left, plugging in his guitar and shortening the band's name to T. Rex. It proved to be a recipe for success, with the single Ride a White Swan hitting number two on the charts, while the self-titled album stayed on the charts for the next six months. Although the group openly embraced the disposability of their music in a full manifestation of glam sensibility, their music has inspired generations of rock and punk bands, and Marc Bolan himself has become an icon. This release allows contemporary audiences to experience for themselves the power of the band's live shows, with concert footage that has never previously been seen, as well as interviews with the legendary BP Fallon, Marc Bolan's former publicist and friend.
