Part documentary and part concert film, PERLMAN IN RUSSIA follows the well-known master violinist during his historic tour of Russia and features two of his concert performances there. On the 150th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's death, Perlman performed the Russian composer's famous Violin Concerto in D at the Bolshoi Philharmonic Hall in Leningrad. This was also the first appearance Perlman and the accompanying Israel Philharmonic in Russia. During this same tour, Perlman also played a solo concert at the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow. In addition to those masterful performances, this release also contains documentary footage capturing Perlman on the streets of Russia and back stage to offer a glimpse into the man whose talent with a violin is among the best in the world.

Recorded for Czechoslovak Television in1955, Antonin Dvorak`s sparkling Slavonic Dances are here presented by the influential conductor Vaclav Talich, who helped to guide the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for decades during his lifetime. Also included is Martin Suchanek`s documentary on Talich`s personal and artistic life, entitled SELF-CONFIDENCE AND HUMILITY. The title is taken from one of Talich`s quotes describing the role of the conductor, who must have self confidence in directing the orchestra, but humility in the face of the composer whose work he is interpreting.

Antonin Dvorak's most famous opera has the distinction of the largest attendance of any ever shown in the Czech Republic, and has been performed in distinguished opera houses worldwide since its 1901 premier. Dvorak has assumed his place in the canon of great composers, and with RUSALKA he produced the great Czech national opera. This version, staged for Czech television in 1975, was directed by Bohumil Zoul, with stunning cinematography by Ilja Bojanovsky. Essentially a Bohemian interpretation of the little mermaid fairy tale, legendary soprano Milada Subrtova stars as Rusalka, and Eduard Haken as the water sprite who risks everything for the sake of human love. Many of the roles were filled by top soloists of the National Theater opera company, including alto Marie Ovcacikova singing the witch; Zdenek Chalabala conducts with an eye for the fantastical.
