The Opera Bastille provides a great setting for one of the last productions choreographed by Rudolph Nureyev during his stay in Paris. Manuel Legris and Monique Loudieres take the roles of the star-crossed lovers in the familiar tale, while Prokofiev's epic score is lovingly rendered by the Paris Opera Orchestra. Naturally the choreography is stunning throughout, with Nureyev even outdoing his own previous highs with some incredible set pieces. The chemistry between Legris and Loudieres is electric throughout, and the stage sets and lighting provide a subtle and appropriate backing for the ballet. Maurice Bejart has taken his own impression of Tchaikovsky's greatly loved ballet, and turned it into a work of personal significance. Using the original score, but augmenting it with waltz and accordion music, Bejart evokes memories of his own childhood -- transporting the setting from St. Petersburg to Marseilles. With Fiorenza Cossotto and Rosalind Plowright among an acclaimed cast, this version of Verdi`s IL TROVATORE, filmed at the Arena di Verona, is a faithful version of the great master`s work.
