Set in the years between 1965 and the late 1980s; Produced and released in 1991.Actor-director Robert Townsend came to fame depicting the pitfalls of the Hollywood experience for black actors with his 1987 film HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE. Four years later, he took on the mid-`60s music scene with THE FIVE HEARTBEATS. After doing extensive research with long-lived pop/R&B group the Dells, he painted a cinematic scene of five young friends in the 60s who share the dream of making music. They journey together through three decades, experiencing all the ups and downs show business had to offer, intensified by the difficulties faces by black acts in the era of civil-rights protest. Interacting as everything from a close-knit musical family to occasional bitter rivals, the fictional Five Heartbeats experience both success and tragedy in this excellent film. The multi-talented Townshend functions as both director and star, alongside compelling performances by a cast that includes Leon and Diahann Caroll. Featuring a mix of original songs and classic Motown material, THE FIVE HEARTBEATS is an irresistible combination of music and drama that captures a unique period in American cultural history.

Seven Year Zigzag (DVD) Seven Year Zigzag (DVD) » Seven Year Zigzag (DVD)

A uniquely-executed autobiographical rumination, Richard Green's film is a collage of various and sundry materials including old newsreels, animation, and live action in both color and B& W film. It is also narrated entirely in rhyming couplets, and Green's is the only voice that is heard, intoning the voices of all the characters and providing a running commentary.
There is a story here, however, and it is ex-hippie Green's own, recounting his early filmmaking ambitions, and his decision to join the corporate world while he worked on his screenplay. Eventually he went to London to start a successful band, and to Los Angeles to start a not-so-successful club.
Among the many dreams that Green chases is also his lost love, whom he dubs only the one who got away. A mishmash of poetry, drama, and documentary, the film carries a surprisingly strong message couched in the melange of styles and the zig-zagging plotline. The heartfelt and sincere moral to this story is that it is never a mistake to chase your dreams, and if failure ensues it is the less tragic for having tried.DVD Features:Region 1Disc One: 7 YEAR ZIGZAGAdditional Release Material: Bonus Footage - 1. In the Oregon Territory, mountain man Adam Pontipee (Howard Keel, acting and singing with gusto) comes to town to sell his crops and woo a woman to be his wife, succeeding with spirited Milly (Jane Powell), who is tired of feeding and waiting on so many men at the local inn. Her dreams of keeping house for just one man are shattered when she discovers that Adam shares his pigsty cabin with six brawling brothers. Milly's good cooking and stubborn nature whip the young men into shape and inspire them to seek women of their own. But after a disastrous barn raising during which the brothers snare the attention of the town girls only to be taunted into fighting with the town men, Adam suggests his brothers forget gentle methods of love and follow the actions of the Roman with the Sabine (Sobbin') women. The kidnapping of their six sweethearts spurs Milly to throw the men out of the house, but enforced proximity caused by winter and the brothers' good intentions just might help love bloom again.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingKeep CaseMaking of documentary8-page booklet bursting with behind-the-scenes excitementTheatrical trailer
