This concert which took place in 1990, was a step along the long road of reconciliation between the two countries of Germany and Israel. The Berlin Philharmonic toured Israel and at the end featured a musical meeting with the Israel Philharmonic. Recorded in 1986, this concert from acclaimed soprano Renata Scotto was shot in Quebec. Scotto shot to fame in the early 1950s after taking on the role of Violetta in LA TRAVIATA, and winning over critics and fans with her superlative performance. Raffi Armenian conducts the Symphonique de Quebec throughout, providing a suitable backing for the talented soprano to work from. 42ND STREET: Splashy Hollywood does splashy Broadway in this behind-the-scenes of a show musical. The leading lady is, as many times before, suddenly unavailable and the understudy chorus girl is thrust into the limelight. Last minute preparations for opening night with the new star turn the entire production on its ear before the big premiere. DAMES: This backstage musical features dancing ironing boards and puzzle pieces amongst its surreal delights. Blondell, Keeler and Powell sing, dance and chew up the scenery in a hoary plot about a rich bluenose`s attempts to close down a Broadway show. Never mind. FOOTLIGHT PARADE: A stage producer discovers that talking pictures have killed the demand for musical shows, so he re-channels his talents into creating live musical numbers for movie theaters to present between features. His fledgling business is threatened by unscrupulous business partners, conniving golddiggers, and spying competitors.
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933: A classic 1930s musical, GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 offers some of Busby Berkeley s most spectacular choreography. Todd Graff's crowd-pleasing directorial debut pays tribute to summer camps, musical theatre, and Stephen Sondheim. The heartwarming comedy follows a group of youngsters who gather together for another summer at Camp Ovation, a refuge in upstate New York that nurtures aspiring performers. This year, the arrival of Vlad (Daniel Letterle) gets everyone's juices flowing. There's the pretty, but shy, Ellen (Joanna Chilcoat); the oversensitive Michael (Robin De Jesus); the stuck up Jill (Alana Allen); the tormented, overweight Jenna (Tiffany Taylor); the scheming Fritzi (Anna Kendrick); and the beautiful Dee (Sasha Allen). In awe of the camp's guest instructor, Bert Hanley (Don Dixon), Vlad is crushed to discover that he has become a bitter, cynical alcoholic. Amidst the raging hormones and daily melodramas, the kids must nonetheless concentrate on the task at hand, which includes staging the summer's final production. Determined not to succumb to Bert's negative influence, Vlad convinces everyone to stage a performance that will inspire everyone. Using a cast of incredibly talented unknowns, Graff makes certain that each budding superstar has their moment to shine.
