Though he is best known for penning the standard Mr. Bojangles, Jerry Jeff Walker's career spans nearly four decades. Starting as a post-Dylan folkie in the late 1960s cafes of Greenwich Village, he became an important figure in the back-to-basics country movement when he moved to Austin in the early 1970's and fell in with like-minded artists such as Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, and Townes Van Zandt. The Giselle ballet was approximately 150 years old in 1976. So it was a fitting tribute to the production when the National Ballet of Canada took to the boards in that year for this lavish production. With Frank Augustyn and Karen Kain among the leads, this was a stunningly evocative rendition of the popular opera, which was thankfully captured on camera for posterity.
