The Soviet Union's foremost conductor was YEVGENY MRAVINSKY. Mravinsky started out as a rehearsal pianist, but after time at the Leningrad Conservatory became skilled at conducting and composition as well. He was made head conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic in 1938, a position he held until 1982.
