The European Concerts mounted by the Berlin Philharmonic take place in a different European city every year. For the eleventh year, Istanbul was chosen and the concert took place in the city's oldest church St. Irine, or the Church of the Holy Peace. This 2005 concert, held in Venice to ring in the New Year, rivaled the famous Vienna concert in terms of star power and breathtaking performances. Conducted by the renowned Georges Prjtre on the eve of his 80th birthday, the Teatro La Fenice orchestra and choir deliver fantastic renditions of many of the finest pieces of Italian music. This recording features performances of Micha Van Hoecke`s ballets, performed in some of the city`s most beautiful locales. Works by Puccini, Verdi, and Rossini make this concert a delightful excursion into the best of Italian culture.
