Based on the libretto by Hugo Von Hofmannsthal, Richard Strauss's classic operatic comedy takes place in Vienna in the 1740s. Considered by many to be a work of genius, Hofmannsthal's libretto explores each character in depth. Strauss, who wrote the opera in as little as five months between 1910 and 1911, infused the choral scenes with vibrant life, turning in what would become his most successful opera. Making its debut in Dresden in January 1911, DER ROSENKAVALIER was first performed under the directorial expertise of the accomplished Max Reinhardt. Although the famous opera has been interpreted and performed in many different ways, few have taken to the production of MADAMA BUTTERFLY with the same gusto and guile as soprano Anna Moffo. Fully inhabiting the role of Cio-Cio San, Moffo pulls off a stunning performance in this production, which was filmed on January 24th, 1956. was performed at the Glyndebourne Festival. Gustav Kuhn conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra as stars Ryland Davies, Valerie Masterson, and Lillian Watson bring Mozart`s three-act opera to life. The story revolves around a daring rescue carried out by the fianci of a woman who has been kidnapped by pirates and languishes in a Turkish harem.
