ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, based on a work my Moliere and composed by Richard Strauss, draws in viewers to its opera within an opera, hosted by a nouveau riche man who demands a spectacular evening of entertainment for his guests, which includes fireworks and both a comic and tragic opera. As the opera company prepares to take the stage, the gentilhomme becomes worried about fitting in all the events, and orders both operas to be staged together. The ensuing chaos finds the tragic figure of Ariadne (Susan Anthony) constantly interrupted by comedians, providing sharp commentary on the distinctions between serious and comic operas.Directed by Marco Arturo Marelli and conducted by Colin Davis, this Semperoper Dresden production makes clear the opera's setting, keeping the action within the confines of the mansion, and including guests milling about, characters who generally remain only implied in other productions. This reworking of Gaetano Donizetti's LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR was recorded at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova. Shot in June 2003, the production was originally taped for television, and beautifully captures some incredible performances. The Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice work their magic under the expert guidance of Patrick Fournillier, while a stellar cast work their way through the opera. Among them are Roberto Frontali (as Lord Enrico Ashton), Marcelo Alvarez (playing Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood), Stefania Bonfadelli (as Miss Lucia), and many others.

Martin Cortland, a philandering Broadway producer, has the habit of hitting on chorus girls and giving them expensive trinkets. Whenever he finds himself in trouble with Mrs. Cortland, Martin just coerces dancer-director Robert Curtis (Fred Astaire) into taking the blame for his overtures. This time, Mrs. Cortland catches Martin hitting on Sheila Winthrop (Rita Hayworth)-- an affable and alluringly beautiful woman. Robert agrees to bail Cortland out one more time, but he finds himself in trouble with Shelia's protective older brother. Robert joins the Army to avoid confronting Shelia's sibling, only to discover he's an officer in the army. Luckily, Martin is going to produce a show for the troops and hire Robert to direct the effort -- keeping him safe from bodily harm. Robert may be in the army now, but at least he can woo lovely Shelia for himself.
