The work of Luigi Cherubini may not be as well known as his contemporaries, but he has a reputation for producing some haunting works, in particular
Requiem in C-minor
from 1816, and
Medea,
which is interpreted here. Shot in 2004, a cast including Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni, Chiara Chialli, and Elisabetta Scano perform to a musical backdrop provided by the Orchestra of the Marialisa de Carolis.

In these two films director Christopher Nupen draws on some lauded names from the classical music world to perform in tribute to Franz Schubert. The first focuses on the early quintet
The Trout,
and features a group of celebrated musicians--including Itzhak Perlman, Jacqueline du Pri, and Pinchas Zukerman--running through rehearsals for the piece, then performing it. In
The Greatest Love & the Greatest Sorrow,
Schubert`s final months are reenacted, using music from the composer`s last works and featuring the great bass-baritone Andreas Schmidt.

Placido Domingo conducted this production of MADAMA BUTTERFLY, performed in Torre del Lago, where Puccini made his home in a local villa he owned. The story unfolds as the American Lt. Pinkerton marries a geisha in early 20th Century Nagasaki. In love for the moment, Pinkerton declares his intention to someday find a real American wife, and later proceeds to do just that. The loyal and honorable Madama Butterfly chooses suicide over a life of disgrace. The illustrious cast of this presentation features the celebrated soprano Daniela Dessi, as well as Fabio Armiliato, Juan Pons, and Rossana Rinaldi.
