A prolific composer who enjoyed a great deal of success during his own time, Verdi has come to be credited with reviving opera after Rossini--with whom many thought the form to have died--endowing it with new life and a greater possibility for expression. Considered to have grown only more imaginative and inventive in his later years, Verdi's last three operas are commonly thought to be his best, and the present work takes its place among these. Completed in 1886 after a 15-year break from opera, OTHELLO is Verdi's second Shakespearean dramatization, and adheres closely to the original text.
