Combining performance footage with candid backstage interviews, this is a wonderful overview of the life and career of Barbara Bonney. The bulk of the musical highlights come in a rendition of Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe, which has been retitled A Scandinavian Dichterliebe. Malcolm Martineau accompanies her on the piano throughout, providing subtle backing to Bonney's stunning soprano voice. Bonney lived in Sweden for 8 years, which may explain the retitling of Schumann's work. While living there she uncovered many works from a variety of composers, most of which had seldom been performed outside of Scandinavia, and took to reworking them with a gusto familiar to her many fans. British jazz trombonist Cliff Hardie is a regular on London`s surprisingly fertile jazz scene. Though having a trombonist as a bandleader is rare, Hardie possesses that rare combination of talent, virtuosity, and magnetism that makes it work. He is backed by the UK All-Stars, who are a 19-piece band consisting of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, guitar, piano, bass, and percussion. The big band enthusiastically pummel through an infectious set that includes tunes by Danny Street, Malcolm McFarlane, and John Barclay.
