The career of Pierre Monteux has seen him conduct a fabulous array of ballet's all over the world. He established himself in America in 1916 after superlative work in his native Paris, with the Metropolitan Opera in New York offering him the chance to work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the first time in 1919. A priceless classic, MY FAIR LADY has become one of the most popular musicals of all time. Based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play PYGMALION, the film swept the Academy Awards. Cecil Beaton's lavish sets and costumes and Lerner and Loewe's winning score became the background for George Cukor's striking mix of styles that ranged from the fantastic to the abstract in his telling of the tale of a waif who's educated into being a lady. Egotistical linguist Professor Henry Higgins (Oscar-winning Rex Harrison) bets his friend, Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White), that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) in time for an important society ball. Performed by talented musicians Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, RAGA BHOOPALI is a peaceful, engaging work of classical Indian music. Playing the santoor--a traditional stringed instrument--as well as the flute and the tabla, the artists present this formally rigorous work in an improvised, spontaneous, and thoroughly enjoyable way. This release is a follow-up to 1967s blockbuster CALL OF THE VALLEY, which was the first thematic recording in Indian classical music, telling the story of a young couple living in the Kashmir Valley. The story of the sequel reflects the changing times, having shed some of the innocence and harmony originally depicted, while the work still aims to inspire peace and love through the medium of music.
