Since the 1930s, religious congregations have been incorporating the joyful sounds of the steel guitar into their ceremonies. Along with his brother, Darick Campbell has used his eight-string lap steel guitar skills to bring the excitement of this African American gospel music to wider audiences.
Here, Campbell teaches his unique style through traditional gospel numbers such as
I`ll Fly Away,
Walk with me, Lord,
and
Amazing Grace.
Campbell breaks apart the chord, bass, and melody sections of each song, so that viewers can tackle each part one at a time. In addition to explaining such topics as: vibrato, octave-licks, tuning, bar-technique, hammer-ons, and string blocking, Campbell also demonstrates how he gets his lap steel guitar to make that
singing
sound, by utilizing such tools as the wah-wah pedal, volume, and tone-controls. This instructional program also features play-along sections with backup by the Campbell brothers.
