This reworking of Gaetano Donizetti's LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR was recorded at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova. Shot in June 2003, the production was originally taped for television, and beautifully captures some incredible performances. The Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice work their magic under the expert guidance of Patrick Fournillier, while a stellar cast work their way through the opera. Among them are Roberto Frontali (as Lord Enrico Ashton), Marcelo Alvarez (playing Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood), Stefania Bonfadelli (as Miss Lucia), and many others.

Before moving to Morocco and finding fame as an author, Paul Bowles had a successful career as an avant-garde composer. NIGHT WALTZ: THE MUSIC OF PAUL BOWLES, a documentary by first-time filmmaker Owsley Brown, attempts to uncover this lesser-known side of the enigmatic Bowles. Filmed in the years just before his death in 1999, NIGHT WALTZ features interviews with Bowles at his home in Tangier. While physically frail, he discusses at length his experiences as a young composer and his feelings toward his music, which--in contrast to the often lavish brutality of his writing--is full of charm, as the film reflects in every way. Interspersed throughout are a series of visual essays set to Bowles' music, made from footage of noted avant-garde filmmakers Rudy Burckhardt and Nathaniel Dorsky, among others. Using images of New York, Mexico, and Morocco, as well as pure abstraction, they brilliantly complement the music, much of which was written not as concert music, but as incidental music for dance, theater, and film. Filmed at La Scala in Milan, this is a faithful rendition of Gaetano Donizetti's three act opera, and is conducted by the acclaimed Stefano Ranzani. The tragic tale of love in wartime sees Edgardo of Ravenswood (Vincenzo La Scola) planning to marry the sister (Mariella Devia) of his bitter rival, Lord Enrico Ashton of Lammermoor (Renato Brusson). Ashton resorts to some devious tactics in an attempt to separate the two lovers, notably forging a letter from Edgardo stating that he has found another woman. This paves the way for Ranzani to marry off his sister to Lord Bucklaw, an arrangement which is thrown into turmoil when Edgardo returns from battle and challenges Bucklaw to a duel. Further twists and turns in the plot ensue when Edgardo witnesses the marriage contract between Bucklaw and his former lover, leading to a highly dramatic end to the sad story.Shot in 1992, this is a wonderfully staged production of Donizettio's work. Powerful and moving in equal measures, Ranzani's masterful conducting holds together an often complex storyline, and draws some remarkable performances from the leads.
