Often eclipsed in the opera canon by Weber's masterpiece, DER FREISCHUTZ, EURYANTHE is a stunning, experimental work, highly representative of the composer's romantic nature. The city of Cologne and the Cologne Philharmonic host this program of music by two of the 20th century's most prominent and influential composers. Segei Prokofiev is, of course, one of the most well known Russian composers of the modern era. Perhaps best known for his ballets as well as his seminal children's work, PETER AND THE WOLF, Prokofiev's music is both sophisticated and acerbic, and was instrumental in paving the way for later composers. Rautavaara, the Finnish composer, came to prominence in the 1960s for his striking Neo-Romantic works that ran the gamut from opera to solo work.
