Acclaimed B-movie director Edgar G. Ulmer filmed this selection of memorable musical performances, loosely connected by the story of Nora, an Irish scrubwoman (Marsha Hunt) whose passion for classical music causes her to clash with her jazz-loving pianist son (William Prince). The rift caused by their musical differences is eventually healed amid the music of the hall, where Nora works. Arthur Rubinstein, Bruno Walter, and Leopold Stowkowski conduct such accomplished classical performers as vocalists Lily Pons, Ezio Pinza, and Rise Stevens; cellist Gregor Piatgorsky, and violin virtuoso Jascha Heifetz. Vaughn Monroe`s orchestra and jazz trumpeter Harry James also show up, and Nora realizes maybe jazz is okay after all.This was clearly a labor of love for Ulmer, and his fluid direction captures the grandeur and excitement of the concert experience. The main story may be a bit trite, but as a document of these legendary musicians in action, this is a gem that deserves an honored spot in any classical music or film lover`s collection.

Many years spent as a professional drummer have given Jack De Johnette the authority to advise less-experienced musicians on technique. In this instructional program, Jack offers the intermediate drummer his insights on how to create a more spontaneous sound. Through his reggae, funk, rock, and Latin grooves, Jack demonstrates such topics as cymbal technique, stick and brush work, and bass and hi-hat pedaling. Merle Haggard ranks as one of the definitive icons of country music. A multiple Grammy Award winner and a Country Music Hall of Famer, he was in large part responsible for creating the Bakersfield country sound which was popularized in the 1960s. Incorporating jazzy country swing into his catchy sound that made much use of guitar solos, he created a honky-tonk style that was all his own. While he slipped from the limelight in the 80s and 90s, Merle experienced a comeback in 2000 as a new generation discovered him with the spare, powerful album IF I COULD ONLY FLY.
