Claudio Monteverdi, a true Opera pioneer, was determined from the start of his career to always be as truthful as possible in his work. POPPEA, his last opera, fulfills that wish, and was even condemned as immoral on its original release, due to its portrayal of evil`s (brief) victory over the forces of good. Pierre Audi`s sumptuous production, from Amsterdam`s Het Muziektheater, captures all the nuance and emotion of this enduring masterpiece, and features strong and involving performances from Cynthia Haymon, Brigitte Balleys, Michael Chance, and Harry van der Kamp.
