PBS presents a compelling documentary about the bizarre life of legendary jazz singer Jimmy Scott, who made a splash in the 1950s, when he recorded with Charlie Parker, Lionel Hampton, and Ray Charles. He subsequently disappeared for decades, working as a dishwasher and nurse's aide, only to reemerge at the age of 60 to reclaim his rightful position as an unique artist, recording many albums since 1992, and happily performing deep into his seventies. Scott's life was transformed at the age of 12 when it was discovered that he suffered from Kallmann's Syndrome, a hormone deficiency that stopped his development past boyhood, giving him his odd appearance and signature high register as a singer. The film chronicles his fascinating but heart-rending victimization by the jazz music industry of the 1950s and subsequent descent into menial jobs to survive until, invited to sing on a local radio show, he was suddenly discovered all over again.
