Acclaimed British conductor Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra guide viewers through a century of orchestral music in this entertaining and educational release. With the help of photographs and archive film footage, LEAVING HOME VOL. 1 aims to place familiar music within a larger social and historical framework. Divided into a series of small segments, the program addresses a different time period with each episode. Beginning in Vienna at the start of the 20th century, Rattle revisits a place and time that gave birth to a musical revolution. Setting the stage for great orchestral works in the second half of the century, Rattle conducts pieces by Webern, Berg, and Sch/nberg.
