SONATA FOR VIOLA, a documentary about the composer Dmitri Shostakovich, endured a turbulent gestation period as director Aleksandr Sokurov clashed with the heavy-handed Soviet authorities over its content. Fortunately, the KGB didn`t destroy the movie after banning it, and it reemerges here, standing as a bleak but thought-provoking memorial to the late composer.
